Welcome Speech by Ulrich Reifenhäuser
Chairman of the Exhibitors' Advisory Board of K 2007

The K show in Düsseldorf once more offers the opportunity to exchange views on the situation of our sector, the international plastics and rubber industries.

Despite all fluctuations and changes experienced by the global economy in the past decade, the consumption of plastic materials has constantly risen by an average of 5.5 percent per year since 1990. The plastics industry can still rely on qualitative and quantitative growth rates - based on one hand on the growing population and the woldwide increasing consumption and on new possibilities of using plastic materials or substituting other materials on the other hand.
Experts forecast further growth of the global plastic material consumption per capita, marked however by considerable regional or country-specific shiftings.

Just now, we are witnessing an economic environment that gives cause for cautious optimism. The world economy gained strength already in the past year; this trend has been confirmed this year. Experts speak of a 'robust' upswing of the world economy. Positive developments can be observed in all three important economic regions of the world: In Asia, estimates of the present situation and expectations for the next few months remain favorable. China does not show any sign of a slowdown and the Japanese economy has gained momentum.
There are clear signs of expansion in Europe, an economical trouble spot in recent times.
A strong growth can still be observed even in the USA, although there are already indications of a slowdown due to structural crises of the American economy.

Our industry, the worldwide plastics and rubber sector, can benefit from an economic pick-up, too - this applies both for machine manufacturers, raw material producers and processors. We have seen very difficult times from which many companies did not come out unscathed, and we urgently require a stable business environment. In this regard, we are all concerned about the development of energy prices - should they rise too strongly, it would have to be feared that the positive effects of the cyclical dynamics might become endangered.
However, one thing is sure: The plastics and rubber industries are excellently prepared to react to customers' increasing demands by providing interesting innovations. New chances for components and products from plastic and rubber materials will be revealed and optimum production processes presented to customers with solution-oriented developments.

Even in this age of high-speed data transmission and global online communication trade fairs have lost none of their fascination and function. On the contrary: the more complex products and processes are getting, the more important a direct dialog between supplier and buyer is. This is particularly true for the Düsseldorf K show: Every three years, the best of the sector meet at the leading trade fair of the international plastics and rubber industries. Exhibitors and trade visitors from all continents come to Düsseldorf to see the latest developments of our dynamic industry live. Raw material producers, manufacturers of machinery and equipment, of semi-finished products and technical parts use the K show to rate themselves and present their innovations in direct comparison with each other. But they also come to early recognize trends from communication with customers and competitors and to shape markets. Foundations for trustful, long-term business relations are laid in dialog between supplier and customer. For that reason we are anxiously looking forward to seeing how our sector will present itself at the world's leading trade fair K 2007 in October!
